NICHE is a pilot series of workshops held over two Sundays in July. Curated by Becky Namgauds, aiming to provide a bespoke, rigorous and interdisciplinary up-skilling opportunity for professional dance artists. Six artists will teach a range of their disciplines and styles with a cool down session each day.

 

The first pilot series will focus on acrobatics & partnering skills, Breakin, contemporary floor work, contact improvisation and Yoga for dancers.

Acrobatics into partnering

Nat Whittingham is an acrobat and circus artist, originally trained as a trampoline gymnast. He started out with Nofit State Circus at the age of 18 and toured internationally with their show Bianco. He is an ongoing teacher and collaborator with them.

From 2014 he studied at L’ESAC in Brussels, specialising in Teeterboard. before heading to France and starting work with Compagnie Bivouac on their outdoor touring show A Corps Perdu.

He has also worked extensively in the UK, with companies such as Upswing Aerial, Dot Comedy, and Chivaree Circus.

Gabbie Cook is a dance and circus artist from the UK. She began training in artistic gymnastics at the age of 6 and competed until her mid-teens. She went on to train at The Northern School of Contemporary Dance and graduated in 2014 with a first class honours. Since graduating, she has toured nationally and internationally with Acrojou Circus Theatre, as well as working with a number of dance, circus and physical theatre companies, including Tom Dale Company, Scarabeus Aerial Theatre and James Wilton Dance.

Emma is a versatile mover with a background in hip hop and contemporary dance. Respected nationally and internationally as a Bgirl, Emma was recently invited to compete in Redbull bc one’s first UK Bgirl Cypher, and is one of the top female breakers in the UK. Graduating with a first class hons degree from Trinity Laban (2014), Emma makes Theatre that challenges and questions society’s views on gender and identity. She has aims of bringing the hip hop scene and LGBTQ community closer together, making queer artists more visible. Emma has worked with brands such as Adidas and Levis, and has performed with Rosie Kay Dance Co, Boadicea, Far From The Norm and Ella Mesma company, to name a few.

COOL DOWN & YOGA with Becky Namgauds

To finish the day  Becky will lead a cool down consisting of Yoga, stretching, massage and relaxation. Becky completed her Hatha-Raja Yoga Teacher Training in 2018, lead by Ambra Vallo at london's Indaba Yoga Studio. 

Floorwork & Contemporary with Sabrina Gargano

Sabrina is a free-lance dance artist. After completing the Professional Development Jasmin Vardimon Course JV2 in 2014, Sabrina performed in U.K. and abroad. She collaborated with PanicLab Dance Theatre (U.K.), Gregory Maqoma for Companhia Instàvel (Portugal), Tom Dale (U.K.) Company Idem (Switzerland) ,Ciemulator Dance Theatre (Switzerland), Beatrice Allegranti Dance Theatre (U.K.) Richard Chappell (U.K.), Fuora Dance Project (U.K.), Victoria Fox for //Tribe (U.K.), Mafalda Deville for Companhia Instavel (Portugal), Becky Namgauds and Jasmin Vardimon. Sabrina also collaborates with Verena Schneider, their duet was performed in Italy, London and North Ireland. She was commissioned to choreograph the youth company at The Point, Pera University, Lincoln University. She teaches workshops in the internationally, is an Education Facilitator for Jasmin Vardimon Company.

The class is very physical and dynamic, drawing from Sabrina's backgroung and experience as a professional dance artist. The class includes exercises that allows to connect breath and body, improvisation, floor work, which is very enriched by the use of spirals, fast transitions to challenge coordination and stamina and a big influence of Capoeira which is inspiring Sabrina's work since five years. These elements are fused into a practice focuses on grounding, efficiency, fluidity and connection through space and in and out of the floor through acrobatic transitions.

Contact improvisation & partnering with 

Lewis Wilkins

Lewis trained at London Contemporary Dance School, and there he began his journey into Contact Improvisation. He graduated in 2009 and has since performed choreographers and companies including; Tom Dale, TrashDollys, Jean Abreu, New Adventures, Richard Alston, Léa Tirabasso, Riccardo Buscarini, The National Theatre for Angels in America directed by Marianne Elliot, and Scottish Dance Theatre. While dancing for Scottish Dance Theatre Lewis performed in existing repertoire by Hofesh Shechter, Liv Lorent, and Fleur Darkin; and in new creations with Victor Quijada, Jo Strømgren, Damien Jalet and Jorge Crecis. 

Lewis began teaching professionally in 2012, and has been specialising his pedagogy towards Contact Improvisation since 2014. He teaches CI and floor work for open and company professional classes in the UK and abroad, and recently taught for DV8 Physical Theatre. Lewis teaches regularly on the degree programmes at London Contemporary, London Studio Centre, and Rambert School. He taught at the festival Agitart Figueres Es Mou 2018 in Catalonia, and has been programmed to teach at B12 festival 2019 in Berlin.

Yoga for Dancers with Mary Mannion

Mary is a professional contemporary dancer and has been teaching yoga for over five years. Her classes actively encourage people to feel their way through the practice and allow for genuine self enquiry. A large emphasis is placed on breath, bandhas, and balancing strength equally with flexibility. She believes the rest just happens if you don't try too hard and have a good sense of humour when you fall over.
